Flowers for female Slovak writers

Second continuation of a series honoring leading Slovak women writers, inspired by the timelessness of their works that continue to inspire generations. May these everlasting flowers remind us of their enduring greatness and legacy.

This jewelry series is a continuation of our original collection Flowers for Slovak Women Writers. To the original trio of writers - Terézia Vansová, Božena Slančíková-Timrava, and Ľudmila Podjavorinská - we have now added three more equally significant authors: Elena Maróthy-Šoltésová, Hana Gregorová, and Margita Figuli. Once again, we studied patterns from traditional folk costumes of their native villages, and, as has become our tradition, we photographed the collection on remarkable teachers recommended by you.

Already during the first collection, we realized that the older a person becomes, the better they understand things they could never fully comprehend as children. To truly understand certain works, ideas, or actions of others, one must mature. Unfortunately, adulthood rarely leaves us time to return to what we once learned in school. Days pass in flashes, repeating themselves endlessly, and we often fail to stop and reflect on the profound thoughts that could shape us. When, as adults, you read the biographies of many women writers whose names and works you painfully memorized as children, suddenly you understand. Suddenly you see flashes of enthusiasm in your teacher, passionately quoting passages from novels. Suddenly you understand her, and you realize that when a teacher truly loves their work, they can teach children to empathize with the adult world. They do not need to fully understand it yet - it is enough to feel empathy toward it. Because the sooner we learn empathy for others, the sooner we become less selfish. And stories are one of the best ways to step into another person’s world. The better a story is written, the deeper it touches people. And the better the teacher who awakens enthusiasm within us, the sooner these stories find their way to us.

That is why we felt the need to create something that would celebrate both the creators of these stories and the women who wear them. Because the more our society progresses, the more important will be the people who motivate us and enrich us with knowledge during our most fragile years.

So far, we have created six small collections dedicated to six remarkable women writers - and there are still many more who could inspire us.

ELENA MARÓTHY-ŠOLTÉSOVÁ

Krupina

“The most fascinating thing always has been, is, and always will be people themselves.” - E. Maróthy-Šoltésová

The jewelry collection Flowers for Elena Maróthy-Šoltésová is inspired by patterns from the folk costume of her native town, Krupina.

We photographed the collection on teacher Helena Hajná, whom you yourselves recommended to us.

“This is such a beautiful idea. The moment I saw this post, one wonderful woman came to mind - a woman with a huge heart who inspired me every single day throughout high school. I always told myself that if I ever became a teacher, I would want to be like her. And now I teach too, and I think of her very often. It is Helenka, Hela Hajná, who brightened every classroom she entered, and whose smile remained there long after she left. She went through so much with us, yet she always stood by us with love. She respected every student and always tried to help them as much as possible. She is incredibly kind and funny, and I believe that if you asked any of her students, colleagues, or coworkers, they would tell you the same: if you are looking for someone who would beautifully complement your jewelry - and whom the jewelry would beautifully complement in return - it is her. Helenka teaches at the School of Applied Arts in Trenčín.”

HANA GREGOROVÁ

Martin

“Ah, my tears, you never sufficiently wash away those desires shamed by life.” - H. Gregorová

The jewelry collection Flowers for Hana Gregorová is inspired by patterns from the folk costume of her native town, Martin.

The collection was photographed on teacher Ľubica Cíferská, whom you recommended to us.

“I would like to nominate our fourth-grader’s homeroom teacher, Mrs. Ľubica Cíferská from the Elementary and Kindergarten School in Častá. Mrs. Ľubka uses various innovative teaching methods and explains lessons to children in playful and entertaining ways. She often takes the children on trips where they continue learning through visits to museums, exhibitions, and other interesting places. She teaches them through experiences. In our village we also have a social care facility for vulnerable people who need assistance, and these fourth-graders have been working with them for about a year now. As a mother trying to teach my children humanity, empathy, and consideration toward others, what I appreciate most is that Mrs. Ľubka places the greatest emphasis on helping children grow into kind, compassionate, and considerate people who are willing to help others and are not afraid to lend a helping hand to the weaker ones. She works very hard to make children feel good in the classroom. Mrs. Ľubka simply has a truly good heart. We love her and we will miss her greatly in secondary school.”

MARGITA FIGULI

Vyšný Kubín

“A person can live only once… only once. And nothing ever returns.” - M. Figuli

The jewelry collection Flowers for Margita Figuli is inspired by patterns from the folk costume of her native village, Vyšný Kubín.

The collection was photographed on teacher Natália Maslen, whom you recommended to us.

“For me, it is Natália Maslen. Why? Because she faced her fears and doubts. She gained confidence as a teacher while remaining humble and respectful toward both children and herself. She inspires even me with the enthusiasm with which she embraces new challenges in the classroom and constantly works on improving herself, thus helping both herself and the children grow - in respect, communication, responsibility, and humanity, which radiates from her.”
